Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a therapist?
Choosing a therapist is a big decision. Finding the "right fit" is crucial, not only for your experience in a vulnerable process, but also for the return you get on your financial investment. Therefore, I think it is important for us to get to know each other.

I offer a free initial phone or video consultation, intended to give us the opportunity to explore our fit to work together. It allows me the opportunity to hear more about what is bringing you to therapy, as well as giving you a chance to ask me any questions you might have about how I work or the therapy process as a whole.

If you are interested exploring working together you can call me at 510-422-1316 or send me an email at paultaruskintherapy@gmail.com. Read here for more on finding the right fit in a therapist.

What can I expect during the first session?
There is no “right way” to do therapy. This process is about you and the first session is no different.

Overall, our initial meeting can be a time for you to share background about your life and what brings you to therapy. What are the things that are important for me to know? I may ask clarifying questions or invite you to share more about yourself. I will also be curious about what has and has not worked for managing your mental health in the past.

You can ask me questions as well. What’s most important about a first session is that you get a real sense of what therapy is like with me. So, if you are curious about how I work or my thoughts about the therapy process as a whole, ask away! Read here for more on what to expect from your first therapy session.

How often do I attend therapy?
I typically meet with clients regularly, once a week. This allows us to get to know one another and develop a relationship. The consistency of regular meetings helps build momentum and continuity and supports deepening into what is most important to you. Occasionally clients come in more often during times of higher need. These decisions, as well as those about length of treatment, are issues we will discuss together on an ongoing basis as needed.

How long does each therapy session take?
My standard session length is 50 minutes. I do offer longer 75 minute sessions to those who would like to meet for more time.

What if I need to reschedule?
My cancellation policy asks for 48-hours notice. If you need to reschedule a session, please let me know 48 hours before our appointment to avoid being charged for the missed session. I will work with you to reschedule your appointment if I can, whether or not you provide 48-hours’ notice.
